HEALING PATHWAYS
QUESTIONS & INSIGHTS
TRAUMA AND MENTAL HEALTH
How do you work with trauma safely?
We work slowly, gently, and with deep respect for your pace.
Safety is always the foundation — in the body, in the mind, and in the wairua.
We don’t force anything to come up.
Through mirimiri, wairua healing, breathwork, and rongoā, we help the body feel safe enough to release what it has been holding.
Safety is created through:
-
grounding the nervous system
-
holding a calm, steady space
-
listening to the body’s tohu
-
working with consent at every step
Healing only unfolds when the client is ready — never before.
Do I need to talk about my trauma during the session?
No.
You never need to tell the story of your trauma in order to heal.
In Rongoā Māori practice:
-
the body already holds the story
-
the wairua already knows what happened
-
the healing doesn’t rely on words
If you choose to kōrero, you can.
But many people experience deep release without needing to speak their trauma aloud.
How many sessions are usually needed?
Every person has their own layers and timing.
Most people begin to feel shifts in the first few sessions — feeling more grounded, more connected, more able to breathe, and more settled within themselves.
Healing is not linear.
It moves at the pace of wairua.
We support you for as long as you need — not according to a fixed number of sessions.
What happens if I get emotional during the session?
Emotions rising is normal — and safe.
When the body finally feels supported, it softens and begins to release what has been carried for years.
If emotion comes up, we:
-
slow everything down
-
guide the breath
-
anchor you back into your body
-
hold space without judgement
-
help the emotion move through gently
Tears, shaking, heat, or waves of emotion are all natural parts of release.
Nothing is “wrong” — your body is simply letting go.
Can trauma come up unexpectedly during mirimiri?
Yes, it can.
Mirimiri gently awakens areas where memory is stored.
As these areas soften, emotions or memories may rise.
This is not something to fear.
It means the body feels safe enough to release what has been held beneath the surface.
We are trained to guide and support you through these moments with calm, respect, and grounding.
How do you manage clients who have PTSD or panic attacks?
We work gently, slowly, and with deep attunement.
With PTSD or panic patterns, we focus on:
-
anchoring the nervous system
-
building safety in the body
-
slow, steady breathwork
-
gentle mirimiri
-
rongoā to settle the puku and calm the mind
-
never going beyond your threshold
We also help you understand the tohu of your body so you feel more empowered beyond the session.
INJURY AND PHYSICAL PAIN
How does Rongoā Māori help with injury recovery?
Injury is not just physical — it is also a message, a tohu.
We work with both the physical and emotional layers of injury through:
-
rongoā poultices for inflammation and pain
-
mirimiri to restore flow, soften tissue, and reconnect you to your body
-
wairua healing to clear emotional memory stored in the injury
-
wairākau or tinctures to support internal repair
-
kōrero to understand why the injury showed itself
Healing becomes deeper when we address both the injury and its kaupapa.
What if my injury is old — can it still be healed?
Yes.
Even old injuries can hold emotional memory.
When we explore what was happening in your life at the time, and release the emotional imprint, the physical body often begins to shift too.
Old injuries can heal beautifully once the story behind them is acknowledged.
Why do injuries keep happening to me?
Repeated injuries are often signs that the body’s early tohu are being overlooked.
The body whispers…
then speaks…
then shouts.
Recurring injuries may mean:
-
you are moving too fast
-
you are overwhelmed or out of alignment
-
your body’s needs aren’t being met
-
you’re carrying unresolved emotional layers
-
something in your life requires change
We help you explore:
What is the injury trying to tell me?
What pattern is showing up?
What needs to shift?
Once the root cause is understood, the pattern usually stops.
How do you know if pain is physical or emotional?
Most pain carries both.
Emotional pain often:
-
moves around the body
-
intensifies with stress or certain memories
-
feels like heaviness, tightening, or pressure
-
changes during breathwork or mirimiri
Physical pain often:
-
stays in one location
-
relates to a specific event
-
responds to touch and movement
We look at both layers — because healing requires addressing both.
